Compare two different ways to create a case identity

Print and apply produces the image on a label and then places that label onto the case. Direct case coding prints onto the packaging surface itself, commonly using a suitable inkjet system. Both approaches can serve case-identification tasks, but substrate variation, required data, scanner conditions and the receiving specification determine whether either is acceptable.

A label offers a controlled print surface, but must still attach reliably. Direct coding avoids a separate applied label, but relies on the selected ink and printer working with the board, coating, print area and presentation. Neither route automatically guarantees barcode quality or customer acceptance. An equipment manufacturer’s comparison provides context; the trial must establish suitability for your cases.

Packaging variabilityPrint and apply separates the print surface from board variation, while adhesion must still be proven. Direct coding needs trials across the actual board grades, colours, coatings and existing graphics.

Run a like-for-like case trial

Prepare one acceptance brief for both methods. Use the same product range, customer requirements and inspection arrangement, while allowing each supplier to select its appropriate approved consumables. This avoids comparing a carefully chosen label sample with an unrepresentative inkjet result, or the reverse.

  • Include actual filled or representative cases with the normal board, coating and dimensional variation.
  • Use the longest normal data records and the smallest available approved print area.
  • Run the intended orientation, conveyor motion and scanner arrangement.
  • Check finished results after relevant rubbing, storage, wrapping or transport handling.
  • Record rejected cases, set-up changes, consumable usage and recovery actions alongside print quality.
  • Agree the rule for an unreadable or wrong code before measuring output. Count accepted, correctly identified cases rather than printer impressions.

Questions when comparing labels with direct printing

Is a white label always needed on dark or pre-printed board?

Not automatically, but a controlled label background can simplify contrast where direct-print contrast is difficult. The selected direct-coding system, ink, available area and receiver’s quality requirement must be assessed on the actual board. A label also needs an adhesion and placement trial.

Is direct case coding always cheaper than print and apply?

No. Consumable savings can be offset by rejects, substrate constraints, maintenance, additional inspection or reduced production flexibility. Conversely, a label system adds media handling and application equipment. Compare measured cost per accepted case for the same required outcome rather than a universal price claim.

Can both systems use the same production data?

They may share an upstream source, but message formats, template rendering, status signals and retry behaviour can differ. Define one authorised set of product data, then validate the output from each device. Sharing a network does not prove that their label or code jobs are equivalent.

Can a case use both direct coding and an applied label?

Yes, a project may allocate different information to each method, provided the receiving process is clear and the identifiers remain consistent. Define which code scanners should read and prevent obsolete or conflicting marks from being interpreted as the current identity.
